Farooq, Moily jointly release ‘Green Energy Corridors’ report

NEW DELHI, Sept 14: Powergrid Corporation of India Limited (PCIL) on the advice of Forum of Regulators (FOR)/ Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) and Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has evolved transmission infrastructure requirement and other related services for the integration of large scale envisaged renewable capacity in 12th Plan into the Grid.
Respective State Nodal Agency (SNA)/STU has provided information regarding renewable capacity programme in the eight renewable potential rich states viz Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu Kashmir to Powergrid.
The outcome of the studies is presented in the report entitled ‘Green Energy Corridors’ covering Intra/Inter State Management Centre (REMC), forecasting, etc to address intermittency and variability aspects as well as grid integration issues of large scale RE generation. The report will provide an impetus to large scale integration of renewable energy paving the way for clean development. Estimated investment requirement for the development of above infrastructure would be about Rs 43000 crore.
Renewable energy has the inherent advantage of greater resource flexibility of a distributed energy system. In this direction, transmission plays a central role to facilitate seamless flow of electricity in a reliable and affordable manner, increasing efficiency with the application of smart grid technologies. Towards this, the ‘Green Energy Corridors’ report is one of the most appreciable efforts as the renewable energy sector is coming into increasing focus in the context of climate change vis-à-vis concern on energy security.
Considering its importance, the report has been released jointly by Union Minister of Power and Corporate Affairs, Dr M Veerappa Moily and Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Dr Farooq Abdullah, here today. Many senior officials of Ministry of Power, CERC and CEA were also present.
