Weather improves in Kashmir, night chill continues in Leh-Kargil

SRINAGAR :  Weather finally improved in the Kashmir valley, including summer capital, Srinagar, where isolated rain is predicted even today also while night chill continued in Leh and Kargil in Ladakh region, where the minimum temperature was sub-zero.
Interestingly, Leh and Kargil were more warmer than Srinagar yesterday.     A Met department spokesperson said there could be isolated rain in the Kashmir valley today.
However, weather will remain dry during the subsequent four days in the valley, where barring famed health resort of Pahalgam, the minimum temperature witnessed increase.
People woke up to a dry weather and sun was also playing hide and seek today in the valley, where separatist organizations have called for a general strike in protest against alleged attack on Kashmiri students outside the valley.
Despite 13.2 mm rainfall during the past 24 hours, the minimum temperature at famed health resort of Gulmarg recorded slight increase and settled at 0.6 degree, half a notch below normal.
The maximum temperature there yesterday was 7.5, two notches below normal.    There was a considerable drop in the minimum temperature at Pahalgam, a famed health resort in south Kashmir, which also serves as base camp for annual Amarnath yatra, starting from July 2. Against yesterday’s 5.2 degree, it was 0.8 degree, more than a notch below normal after 6.4 mm rainfall during the past 24 hours.
However, the maximum temperature yesterday there was 14 degree, a notch below normal.     Despite rain the minimum temperature at Qazigund, gateway of Kashmir on Srinagar-Jammu national highway, Kokernag and Kupwara remained above normal.
Weather was pleasant in the summer capital, Srinagar today, after life remained  affected due to rain during the past few days. However, Srinagar was colder than Leh and Kargil yesterday when the maximum temperature was 12.6 degree more than 7 degree below normal.
The minimum temperature in the city was 8.5 degree, half a notch above normal against yesterdays 7.5 degree.     The maximum temperature at Leh and Kargil yesterday was 13.9 degree and 14.1 degree respectively which was more than temperature in Srinagar.
However, the minimum temperature witnessed major drop in Leh as against yesterday’s 4.6 degree, it was minus 1 degree while at border town of Kargil it was minus 2.1 degree against minus 3 degree yesterday.   (AGENCIES)
