We are highly concerned about civilian killings: PDP

SRINAGAR, Apr 16:   People’s Democratic Party (PDP) is highly concerned about civilian killings in Handwara and Nutnussa and assures for meeting the common cause with the bereaved people.
“The party made every effort to ensure a thorough and independent probe in the unfortunate incident and Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti lost no time in issuing clear-cut directions to bring the culprits to book. She met the Union Defence Minister in the wake of the incident and convened an emergency meeting of security top brass in Srinagar ensuring time bound inquiry and a foolproof mechanism to guarantee protection of life and property while maintaining law and order,” a party spokesman said.
” It was in consequence of the Government action that Army top brass including GOC-in-C,  Northern Command Lt Gen D S Hooda visited Handwara and expressed regrets on the incident,” he said.
” PDP is committed to peace and civil rights and will continue to strive for upholding human rights and dignity. Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti holds a promise to provide a secure environment with a responsive and accountable security network. The security agencies will have to come-up to the normal operational standards and lapses causing civilian inconvenience will have to be minimized,” the spokesman added.
Meanwhile, senior leaders and party legislators including Nizamudin Bhat, Noor Mohammad Sheikh- MLA; Mohammad Khurshid Alam -MLC and  Aijaz Ali held an emergency meeting at the party headquarters here today in which they made a fervent appeal to the people to maintain calm. The leaders appealed the conscientious class of society to particularly remain vigilant against mischievous elements who are in habit of creating a chaos and indulge in distortion.
Expressing shock at the incident in Handwara, they  mourned the deaths and expressed solidarity with bereaved families.
