Valley mutton dealers allege extortion in Punjab

SRINAGAR, Apr 18: Kashmir Economic Alliance today alleged that some ‘goons’ in Punjab Government who act as officials extort money from mutton dealers of the Valley in the name of special tax.
“A gang of local goons on the highway along Lakhanpur, Pathankote and Madhopur road in Punjab are extorting money from Kashmiri Mutton dealers and not allowing transporting cattle meant for meat in Kashmir,” the KEA said in statement here.
The KEA said the mutton dealers are forcibly used to pay the ‘special tax’ in the name of Punjab Cattle Fair Act 1987. “Although the cattle is being carried from Gazapore and Delhi under valid documents and receipts, a group of 20-25 people in Lakhanpur, Pathankote road claim to be Government officials and forcibly make them pay the illegal tax which various from Rs 5000-15000 per truck,” it added.
The KEA sought the intervention of State Government and requested Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti to intervene for immediate action against the goons.
