Slides delay re-opening of Mughal Road

Srinagar, Apr 18: The multiple slides along Mughal Road – which connects Kashmir valley with Jammu Division – are delaying the re-opening of this highway even as the snow clearance work has been completed by the concerned department.
Officials told Excelsior that the snow has been cleared from the Mughal Road but the slides are repeatedly delaying its reopening. They said that these slides occur due to melting of snow and heavy rains.
“This year we are facing this grave issue of slides and thus this is affecting the Mughal Road reopening even as we have completed the snow clearance work. Not only slides, but the large stones also come down from mountains and damage the road. This is a very difficult and worrying situation,” the officials added. Earlier, the Mughal Road was scheduled to be thrown open on April 7.
The continuous closure of the Mughal Road is resulting in the massive inconvenience to the people of South Kashmir’s Shopian district from this side who find it hectic to travel via Anantang to Jammu. The students of the Valley who study at Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University also demanded restoration of the Mughal Road.
Meanwhile, the officials said that the macadam of the Mughal Road has also been severely damaged due to inclement weather and slides.
