Rains lash Kashmir valley

SRINAGAR, Apr 22: Kashmir valley was today lashed by intermittent rains and hailstorm at several places damaging apple and almond orchards in Pulwama and Budgam districts.
The rainfall in all the parts of the Valley started last night and continued till early morning. The downpour again started in the afternoon and continued for several hours intermittently. The Meteorological Department has already predicted the wet spell and the scattered rainfall for tomorrow.
Meanwhile, the apple and almond orchards suffered extensive damage as a result of hailstorm along with heavy showers in areas like Goosu, Frasipora, Rahmoo and Karimabad of Pulwama district in south Kashmir.
Local residents said that the strong hailstorm continued for about 10 minutes which resulted in heavy damage to crops like apple, almond and other fruits.   “This year we were expecting good produce as the orchards were in full bloom, but the hailstorms have not only dashed our hopes, but also left the farmers  in distressful situation,” said Abdul Razaq, a resident of Goosu. The hailstorm was also reported from parts of Anantnag district.
A MeT official said the maximum temperature in Srinagar was recorded 18.4 degree Celsius while the minimum temperature settled at 7.6 degree Celsius. Qazigund recorded 17.2 degree Celsius maximum temperature while minimum temperature settled at 8.2 degree Celsius. Pahalgam recorded 15.3 degree Celsius day temperature and night temperature settled at 5.2 degree Celsius.
Maximum temperature in  Gulmarg was recorded 13.2 degree Celsius while the night temperature settled at 1.2 degree Celsius.  Kokernag in south Kashmir recorded 15.7 degree Celsius maximum temperature and 6.1 degree Celsius minimum temperature. The day temperature in Kupwara settled at 17.9 degree Celsius while the minimum temperature remained 7.3 degree Celsius. Leh, which is also called cold desert, recorded 18.6 degree Celsius maximum temperature.
