JAMMU, May 3: To facilitate the smooth cremation of the dead bodies at Purmandal Cremation Ground and save the local forests from felling of trees in the area, the Forest Department has opened a fire wood Depot at Purmandal on the instance of some prominent people and social activists of the area.
The decision will go a long way in protecting the local jungle in the area which has been denuded due to cutting of trees by the people coming to Purmandal for cremation of dead bodies at Devika.
G L Budoo a prominent citizen of the area who along with some social activists had launched an awareness campaign in the area asking people not to cremate the dead bodies in the Devika river in front of Shiv Mandir to maintain the religious sanctity of this sacred place said the supply of fire wood by the Forest Department for cremation of dead bodies at the Cremation ground in the area will also help in protecting the ecology which was facing a threat due to cutting of trees in the area.
He said the wood for cremation will be supplied on cheaper rates and people will also be saved from lot of trouble in felling the trees and taking wood to the cremation ground which otherwise is most expensive.
