Gender disparity

According to Census Report 2011, J&K has shown inequality increasing in male-female population ratio in the State. In an average estimate for each 1000 males there are just around 835 females in the State. The Union Ministry of Social Welfare has launched a nationwide scheme called Beti Bachao Beti Parhao — the brainchild of Prime Minister Modi. The objectives of the scheme are to bring awareness to the masses of people about how important it is to maintain gender parity or near parity in the population. Disparity is not restricted to a few districts only, it is true of other districts as well as the Census Report indicates. The Union Ministry of Social Welfare has done the right thing of extended the Beti Bachao Beti Parhao scheme to ten more districts of the State. Reports indicate that the government is satisfied with the results of the scheme on the ground. The most important part of the scheme is to brig awareness and knowledge to the people in rural and urban areas that gender discrimination is a crime cognizable under law. People have to be educated on the important issue of treating a girl child at par with a boy child. Unfortunately for reasons of poverty, economic backwardness and lack of adequate awareness, some people are unable to realize the potential and merit of female youth in contributing to the march of the country along the path of progress. We hope that the scheme, a tri-ministerial effort of Ministries of Women and Child Development, Health and Family Welfare and Human Resource Development, will go a long way in equalizing male-female population ratio in these ten districts also. The imbalance needs to be removed to make social progress smooth and even.
