JAMMU, May 10: After coming out a number of conflicting statements of various leaders on the issue of Sainik Colony in Kashmir, J&K Ex-Servicemen League (JKESL) has sought clarifications as to what will happen to the Sainik Colony promised by the Government since 2011.
President, JKESL, Maj Gen Goverdhan Singh Jamwal, said that the of proposal was mooted by the Director, Sainik Welfare Department, J&K Government based on large demand of the Ex-Servicemen from the Valley to have a Sainik Colony at Srinagar on the pattern of Sainik Cooperative Housing Colony in Jammu.
“The colony was planned by the Director, Sainik Welfare Department, J&K Government and was approved in the 74th Rajya Sainik Board Meeting held on March 2, 2012 under its president, Governor N N Vohra, which was attended by Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah as vice president and the Army Commander, Northern Command besides concerned Ministers/ Secretaries”, said JKESL president.
Maj Jamwal said that it took some time to identify the land and issue departmental instructions which seem to have been now used for wiping up political controversy, unfortunately initiated by Omar Abdullah who had himself approved the proposal.
Further, clarifying that the Colony is only for the State Subjects as was the Sainik Colony at Jammu, he said there should be no controversy over it and the State Government should precisely say the truth and put full stop on controversy arising on it.
