KATRA, May 25: Police has unearthed an Excise Tax evasion racket, which was being run in active connivance with a liquor distillery, situated in Bari Brahmana Jammu.
The racket  was unearthed following recovery of 650 poly pouches of J&K Excise liquor, from an Alto car, being driven by the accused namely Gurbachan Singh of Dera Babbar, Reasi, who, however, managed to escape leaving behind the vehicle, bearing registration number JK02AJ- 1879.
During investigation, it came to notice that the seized liquor does not have any Batch Number, manufacturing date and Security Hologram. Thereafter, on the direction of  the Deputy Excise Commissioner (Executive) Jammu,  Excise Inspector, Rajesh of Udhampur Reasi Excise Range examined the consignment  and reported to ETO Doda- Udhampur range that the seized liquor was manufactured by M/S Rockland Distilleries Pvt Limited, Bari Brahmna Jammu.
Even as the investigation is still on and involvement of some Excise officials in the racket is not ruled out, it was established that the liquor was being sold in open market without paying Excise duty.

In the said case, Excise Department had imposed fine on M/s Rockland Distilleries but the company has again violated the rules and indulged in malpractice of Tax evasion in spite of the written assurance which the company had given to the Deputy Excise Commissioner, Distilleries, Jammu that in future there will be no repetition of such incident.
