JAMMU, May 28: Protest sparked after a lineman died today of electrocution while working in Rajpura area of city outskirts.
“Parshotam Lal son of Krishan Lal, a resident of Phallian Mandal, a daily wager in Power Development Department was repairing a technical snag on electric post in Rajpura area this morning when he received an electric shock and fell from the ladder on which he had climbed”, police sources said.
They said that in unconscious condition, he was rushed to Government Medical College and Hospital, Jammu where he was declared as brought dead by the doctors. “After completing all medico-legal formalities the body of the deceased was handed over to his legal heirs for last rites while a case in this connection was registered and inquest proceedings initiated under 174 CrPC”, they added.
Later in the day, family members and relatives of the deceased staged a protest by keeping his body on Tawi bridge. The protestors criticized J&K PDD for not issuing safety and hi-tech gadgets to the linemen for repairing faults, due to which threat is posed to the lives of many.
Shouting slogans, the protesting family members were demanding compensation and a permanent job for the one of their family members. The life came to standstill for about an hour, as protestors also disrupted vehicular traffic on busy main Tawi bridge.
Later, officers from police and civil administration including SDPO Gandhi Nagar, Sachin Gupta and Additional DC, Jammu, Arun Manhas, reached the spot and pacified the protestors. On the assurance of the Additional DC that their demands will be looked into, the protestors lifted the blockage and dispersed.
