Kashmir has 10 slaughter houses against 13 in Jammu

SRINAGAR: The Kashmir valley, where majority of population is non-vegetarian, there are 10 slaughter houses against 13 in Jammu where majority people are vegetarian.

However, the Jammu and Kashmir government has sought Rs 2452.36 lakh from the Centre for construction of a modern Abattoir in the city which would have a large facility for animals. This information was given by Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh in reply to a question by Vibod Gupta in the Legislative Council today.

He said there are 23 slaughter houses—Jammu 13 and Kashmir 10. Jammu has two while Srinagar one slaughter house, the reply said, adding that Batote in Jammu and Badgam in Kashmir too have two each. However, Ramnagar, Akhnoor, Jourian, Doda, Bhaderwah, Rajouri, Chenani, Poonch and Udhampur in Jammu region have one each while in Bandipora, Kulgam, Charar-e-Sharief, Sopore, Handwara, Pahalgam and Anantnag in Kashmir one each.

The Minister said an average of 70-80 sheep and goats are slaughtered daily, excluding Tuesday in Jatka slaughter house at Dogra Hall, Jammu and an average of 90 to 100 sheep and goat in Halal slaughter house at Gujjar Nagar, Jammu.

In an average of around 1500 goats and sheep are slaughtered in Srinagar city daily. (AGENCIES)
