Apropos the news item in DE on June 03, 16 where it is reported that Sat Sharma MLA and State BJP president submitted one memorandum, signed by 54 MLAs from different political parties, to Deputy Speaker Niaz Ahmed Gurezi demanding enhancement in their salaries to 2.5 lakh and also in the amount of their CDF from1.5 crore to 5 crores annually. Their demands included lap tops and I pads for the legislators and hike in the pensions of Ex. MLAs and MLC. In this context I am reminded of one of the characteristics of the Indian politicians who are often seen locking their horns and drawing their swords on the floor of the houses but can be seen embracing and hugging each other in the lobbies in the next moment.
It is strange that our legislators who are seen exchanging hot words in the august house, hurling chairs and microphone stands on each other, slapping, disrupting the proceedings of the house, staging walkouts etc. on a slight difference of opinion, whenever matter regarding the welfare of the common man comes for discussion. Maximum of the time of the august house is wasted over the personal rivalries and personal benefits. There are many examples of the monarchs in the world who abandoned meals whenever there was famine in their countries and many left taking sugar in their teas during the days of shortage of sugar in their countries. Why do our lagislators forget that there is mass scale unemployment, poverty in the state. There are lakhs daily wagers who can neither make both ends meet nor can meet out the expanses of education and the medical treatment of their kins with a meagre amount of Rs. 4500 pm. Thousands of SPOs are waiting for their regularizations. The WP refugees are waiting for their settlement, KPs are to be given their right they are entitled for. The political and bureaucratic corruption has bitten deep into the vitals of the state. They should realize that Jammu and Kashmir is a poor state and cannot be compared with the rich states of Punjab, Himachal and Delhi. The Legislators should bear one thing in their mind that the money comes from the pocket of the tax payer and doesn’t grow on the trees. Therefore, maximum part of the State exchequer be spent for the welfare of common man, eradication of poverty, providing facilities in the field of education, health, connectivity, creating job opportunities for the unemployed. The poor man’s money is not to feast over.
