No plan to conduct BPL census, says J&K Govt

SRINAGAR: With few cases of anomaly in Below Poverty Line (BPL) list emerging from some parts of Jammu and Kashmir, the State Government today said there is no plan to conduct the Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC).

Minister for Rural Development, Panchayati Raj, Law and Justice Abdul Haq informed the Legislative Council that the Government has no plan to conduct BPL census in the State.

He said the SECC has already been conducted in 2011-12, wherein the Government has got socio-economic status of the people. Yesterday, several employees, including a tehsildar, were suspended after name of MLA Chhamb was listed in BPL beneficiaries in Jammu region, raising serious questions on the accuracy of the list.

The MLA from Chhamb had earlier complained with the Government that his name has been wrongly incorporated in the BPL list. (AGENCIES)
