Panchayat elections will be held this year: Govt

SRINAGAR: Government today asserted that Panchayat elections will be held in the State this year.

The current term of the Panchayats in the State will end in July this year. Responding to the supplementaries by some legislators in the Legislative Assembly, Minister for Rural Development, Panchayati Raj and Law & Justice Abdu Haq said the Government is making a comprehensive policy to reach out to the left out areas of the State and create sustainable assets for the people.

“I assure the House that the panchayati elections will be held this year in the State,” he said, while replying to a question by NC Member Mian Altaf Ahmed. Generating job avenues for the rural youth under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) is the main focus of the department, Mr Haq added.

Replying to the main question of Ghulam Mohammad Saroori, the Minister said plans for the current year stand sanctioned and work has also been taken up for execution, as per the demand received. Mr Haq said no directions for change of the plan or guidelines have been issued, nor can be issued as it is the prerogative of the concerned Union Ministry.

He said the department has taken up various developmental works during the current financial year in Doda and Kishtwar districts in Jammu. (AGENCIES)
