SRINAGAR, June 11:The manhunt launched against the militants who carried out twin attacks in Anantnag district killing 5 security men last week is on and security forces have arrested eight persons so far and rounded up over a dozen persons for questioning.
The manhunt was launched soon after the attack on Police in Anantnag town last week in which two police men including an officer was killed. The attack was carried out by the militants of Lashkar-e-Toiba who were caught on a camera while carrying out the attack.
Police have already circulated posters of the two LeT militants in Anantnag district. These militants have been identified as Junaid Ahmad Mattoo son of Manzoor Ahmad Mattoo resident of Khudwani in Kulgam district and another militant as Ali, a foreigner.
Special Operations Group of Jammu and Kashmir Police arrested two youth including brother of a Lashkar-e-Toiba militant allegedly involved in the attack. One of the detained youths, Waseem Ahmad Lone, is the brother of Junaid Lone, the LeT militant hailing from Khudwani.
After their arrest, six more youth were detained so far in connection with Anantnag attack on police. They are Aqib Sofi, son of Abdul Rashid Sofi, Arif Sofi, son of Fayaz Ahmad Sofi, Shafat Sofi, son of Mohammad Yousuf Sofi, Majid Ali, son of Ali Mohammad Mattoo, Omar Rasheed, son of Abdul Rasheed Wani and Yamin Yousuf alias Bilal, son of Mohammad Yousuf Dar, all residents of Khudwani in Kulgam district.
Sources said that the security agencies have established it that the militants who carried out the attack on police in Anantnag started from Khudwani village. However, on the mode of transport there are conflicting reports but they have used a four wheeler for reaching the spot.
Security forces for last one week conducted raids and cordon and search operations against these militants and they don’t want any militant strike in Anantnag which is going to polls later this month. It is high profile contest where Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti is seeking election for the Legislative Assembly.
In the meantime, security forces detained two persons after overnight cordon and search operation in Bemina locality of Srinagar after security forces received information about presence of two militants.
Sources said that two militants were residing in a house for last one month in the locality. However, as soon as the security forces cordoned off the locality, militants fled away minutes before that. Security forces this morning arrested two people from the locality and their role for harbouring militants is being ascertained.
Security forces are also looking for three Jaish-e-Mohammad militants who they believe are hiding somewhere in Srinagar city after their commander and his associate were killed last month in Mahraj Bazar area of city.
