JMC establishes 47 Rehri Zones

JAMMU, June 16: Jammu Municipal Corporation has established 47 Rehri Zones under its jurisdiction and started the process of shifting all street vendors to these zones is on and so far 10 zones have been made operational.
In order to motivate and involve the relevant stakeholders in the process, JMC Commissioner  Mandeep Kaur called the first meeting of Town Vending Committee constituted under the “Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street) Act, 2014, today.
It is pertinent to mention that National Policy on Urban Vendors (2009) of Government of India and further directions of the Supreme Court require every city to have earmarked zones for street vendors with basic civic amenities, so that they may have honourable living.
During the meeting issues related to rehabilitation of street vendors and Rehri Walas to the identified rehri zones were discussed with the representatives of various street vending organizations and unions so that they could live with dignity and earn their livelihood. JDA vice chairman Mubarak Singh also spoke about the Government policy that these Rehri Zones have been created to decongest the traffic in Jammu city and provide a fixed place of business to the street vendors.
Commissioner JMC also assured the representatives of the vendors and hawkers unions that basic amenities like water, electricity, cleanliness etc will be provided in the Rehri Zones and all their problems will be solved on priority basis Vice chairman JDA Mubarak Singh, SSP (Traffic) Udaya Bhaskar B, Additional Deputy Commissioner Dr Arun Manhas, president Chamber of Commerce Rakesh Gupta, president Trikuta Nagar Welfare Society Vikram Gour, president Poonch House Bohri Baldev Raj, president Jewel Rehri Union Om Parkash, president Medical College Rehri Union Girdhari Lal, representative Main Stop Gandhi Nagar Rehri Union Subash Chander, president Talab Tillo Rehri Union Rajinder Kumar welcomed the step taken by JMC and assured their full support in the creation of rehri zones.
Others present on the occasion included JMC Joint Commissioner (A) R S Jamwal, Assistant Commissioner  (Rev.) Mrs Subah Mehta (Nodal Officer), Senior Town Planner JMC Anil Raina, SDPO North Vivek Shekhar,  Senior Manager Housing Board Rajinder Gupta and other staff of JMC.
