GCW Gandhi Nagar celebrates World Peace Day

JAMMU, Sept 21: Literary Club of Government College for Women (GCW), Gandhi Nagar, under the aegis of Centre for Peace Education, celebrated the World Peace Day by holding a symposium on the topic ‘Sustainable Peace for Sustainable Future’.
The function was presided over by Principal of the College, Dr Kiran Bakshi.
The programme began with lighting of candles and paying floral tributes to the ambassadors of peace, who through their efforts had united all the human beings into one strand of love and brotherhood namely Nelson Mendla, Ban-ki Moon, Mother Tresea, Mahatma Gandhi and father of peace studies, John Galtong.
Prof Ashaq Malik, Coordinator, Centre for Peace Studies, initiated the activity by reading out the message of UN Secretary General, Ban-ki Moon and stressed upon the need of cultivating peace in disposition and character.
The students and staff of the college also took the pledge to maintain and inculcate peace as a great virtue in their nature. About 14 students of the college exhorted the need of maintaining world peace for sustainable development of all the nations.
In her address, the principal of the College highlighted the importance of maintaining world peace. She said that this solemn oath should be put into practice by shunning violence, intolerance and by giving space to others in terms of race, gender and ethnicity.
Others spoke on the occasion were Prof Bambroo and Prof Nazia Rasool.
The performance of the students was judged by Prof Aruna Choudhary, Dr Vishal Sharma, and Prof GM Chaudhary.
The first prize was won by Priyanka Choudhary while second prize went in the hands of Sanam Sharief. The third prize was clinched by Arusa Malik and Navamani Hans.
