JU’s Economics Department offers new MA program

Excelsior Correspondent
JAMMU, Sept 21: The Department of Economics, University of Jammu has launched a two-year programme MA Economics with specialisation in Public Policy from the academic session 2012.
According to Prof Dipankar Sengupta, HoD, the  aim of the proposed MA programme is to train economists to analyse matters that belong to the realm of Public Policy.
What is unique about this programme is that while most Masters programmes in Public Policy are interdisciplinary programmes, the MA Economics with specialisation in Public Policy analyses Public Policy heavily from an economist’s perspective.
Currently similar programmes are  offered by very few institutes in India like IIM Bangalore, TERI University New Delhi etc.
Procedural delays in syllabus formation has led to a delay in the launching of this course. But the Department expects to start classes form early October.
The Department will entertain application forms till September 28. B. Com, BBA and BA (with Economics) graduates are eligible to apply.
Prof Sengupta explained the rationale for this new programme by pointing out that  those who have been following the changes in the Indian Economy are aware of the problems and challenges it faces due to inadequate infrastructure, constraints on natural resources as well as the potential and actual challenges created by climate change.
Prof Sengupta in his statement said that those who are trained in this programme will be of use not only for Research Institutes and Think Tanks but also new forms of businesses and consultancy groups that are emerging given the nature of conditions that are to be found in a diverse country like India and companies that are entering those areas which were hitherto monopolised by the State.
Meanwhile, the 16-course MA Economics with specialisation in Public Policy is a self financing programme with 25 seats. The course fee is Rs 60,000 apart from the other fees and admissions have been kept open till September 28, 2012.
