Sukhoi makes maiden flight with 2500 kg BrahMos under its belly

NEW DELHI: Achieving a historic milestone, BrahMos missile was today successfully integrated with front-line fighter aircraft of the IAF Su-30 MKI, which made its maiden flight carrying the 2500 kg formidable supersonic cruise missile system under its belly.

With today’s successful flight, the BrahMos air version programme now inches closer towards actual test firing when a 2.5-ton BrahMos air-to-ground missile will be fired from the Sukhoi-30 in the coming months, an official statement issued by the BrahMos aerospace said.

The aircraft with BrahMos remained airborne for 58 minutes, proving successful integration of the missile system. With successful integration of BrahMos, Su-30 has become a lethal weapon delivery platform. Around 40 Su-30 MKI were expected to be modified to carry such a heavy missile under its carriage.

Government-owned HAL has modified two aircraft for the trial phase of the integration. “It is for the first time in the world that such heavy weight supersonic cruise missile has been fitted on fighter aircraft,” Sudhir Mishra, chief of BrahMos Aerospace said. (AGENCIES)
