12 civilian porters died at Siachen Glacier since 1984

SRINAGAR, June 27: As many as 12 civilian porters have lost their lives at Siachen Glacier, worlds highest battle field in Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir since 1984.
This information was given by Minister for Finance Dr Haseeb Drabu, who also holds the portfolio of Labour and Employment in the Legislative Assembly today to a question by Deldan Namgail, MLA Nobra.
The reply said that as per records available with the Government 12 porters hailing from Nobra constituency working as local labourers have died at Siachan Glacier since 1984.
Army authorities have paid compensation in favour ofnext of kins of the 11 porters as per Workmen’s Compensation Act, 1923 and provisions of Labour Laws.
The remaining one case belonging to Nobra, is pending with the Army for compensation since Marcdh 2016 and is expected to be settled shortly, the reply said.
