Woman’s body found hanging, police detains husband

MENDHAR, July 1: The police today detained a carpenter after the dead body of his young wife was found hanging from a tree near the house at Gohlad in Mendhar this morning.
The deceased has been identified as 30-year-old Sushma Devi, wife of  Rakesh Kumar, resident of  Kandi village in R S Pura (Jammu). The couple was residing in a rented accommodation in the house of one Abdul Kabir at Gohlad.
Rakesh is a carpenter and is working at M/s Gupta Furniture House, Main Bazaar Mendhar for the last several years. He hails from R S Pura area of Jammu district. He married to Sushma, a divorcee having a female child. The couple was living happily but for the last few months, the relations between the two were not good, the police said.
The SHO Mendhar Mr Mir said that after receiving information from  the landlord, they reached the spot and removed the body to the hospital for postmortem. There were some injury marks on the body and her neck was also broken, according to doctors involved in postmortem. He said according to circumstantial evidence, the  possibility of murder can not be ruled out. Rakesh was also said to be suspicious about the conduct of  his wife. He said that a case has been registered in this connection and investigation under 174 CrPC  launched. The husband of the deceased has been detained for questioning.
The husband claimed that Sushma went out at around 11.30 midnight and she bolted the door from outside. Their land lady opened the door from outside when he shouted from inside during early morning.  The land lady however, said that Rakesh was working at Furniture house and he was informed after his wife’s body was noticed hanging from a tree at some distance from the house  in the morning by the neighbours.  The SHO  said that police will also call landlord and landlady for the questioning. The body  after postmortem was handed over to the family and the cremation was also held at Mendhar town this evening.
