NEW DELHI, July 12: Accusing the Narendra Modi-led Government of dealing with the violence in valley in the most casual manner, Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi has charged the Centre of frittering away the gains made in the State with its policies.
As Kashmir is on boil following gunning down of top commander of Hizbul Mujahideen Burhan Wani, Mr Rahul Gandhi, speaking at the Eid Milan reception hosted by Jamait Ulema chief Maulana Arshad Madni last night, alleged that all gains made towards peace in State by previous Congress Govenrmet led by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, have now washed by the Modi Government, which he accused of dealing with the matter in a most casual manner.
With first fatal casualty reported from north Kashmir today and a youth of south succumbing to bullet injuries, the death toll has rose to 32, including a police Jawan and a girl in the valley owing to violence, flared on Saturday, a day after Burhan Wani and two other militants were killed in an encounter with security forces in Anantnag district on Friday evening.
Lauding former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the previous UPA regime for bringing normalcy in militancy-hit Jammu and Kashmir after years of efforts, the Nehru Gandhi scion said he had voiced concerns recently about growing unrest in the valley when he met Finance Minister Arun Jaitley regarding the GST Bill. However, Mr Jaitley did not subscribe to his views and assured him that situation is totally under control. After this, he kept mum, he said.
Mr Gandhi said when Mr Singh left the highest office of the country and Mr Modi assumed the charge in 2014, the situation in Jammu and Kashmir was normal. “Today, I am asking them (BJP). Who brought peace in the troubled State? We won the confidence of the people in the State due to our policies, which isolated militant groups,” Mr Gandhi claimed.
Yesterday’s event saw many prominent personalities like JD-U veteran leader Sharad Yadav, Left leaders Sitaram Yechuri and Mohd Salim, Leader of Opposition and senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, and party leader Salman Khurshid and Sri Prakash Jaiswal (Congress) besides representative of several Muslim groups.
