NEW DELHI, July 15:
Condemning the attempts by Pakistan to internationalise the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, the Congress also took strong exception to the statement by United Nations’ Security General Ban Ki-moon on Kashmir and the United States talking about resolving Kashmir through talks between India, Pakistan and Kashmiri people.
The Congress said Pakistan’s attempts to internationalise the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, the statement by the United Nations’ Security General on Kashmir and the United States Government talking about resolving Kashmir through talks between India, Pakistan and Kashmiri people was a direct offshoot of the failure of India’s policy towards Islamabad.
Addressing reporters here, AICC spokesperson Manish Tewari said, ”The NDA Government’s policy towards Pakistan is a continuous story of “U-turns, somersaults and flip-flops”. This has undermined the National security of the country, he added. ”India-Pakistan relationship is a sensitive one and we expect the Government to handle it in a more mature manner than they have done in the past 24 months.”
Condemning the attempts by Pakistan to internationalise the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, Tewari said, ”Pakistan’s blatant attempt to internationalise the sensitive situation in Jammu and Kashmir, one where they have been an agent provocateur for over two decades, needs to be condemned in the strongest terms possible. This raises a question about the complete absence of not only a strategy, but even a tactical approach of the Modi Government regarding Pakistan.
The belligerence and impertinence which is emanating out of both the security and political establishment of Pakistan is to a large measure because the BJP and Prime Minister have failed to craft a coherent policy towards the neighbouring country.”
”When was the last time India heard a statement from the UN Secretary General on Kashmir? Throughout the 10 years of the UPA, there was never an attempt to interfere. When was the last time that you heard the US talk about resolving Kashmir through talks between India, Pakistan and the Kashmiri people. It is absolutely a flagrant violation of the position that India has consistently taken, that all issues with Pakistan will be sorted bilaterally,” Mr Tewari said.
Mr Tewari said India’s approach towards Pakistan over the last 24 months proved the failure of the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to craft a coherent policy towards Pakistan. ”In May 2014, PM Modi invited Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for his swearing-in. Then we had Foreign Secretary level talks being called off. After that you saw unprecedented tension and firing on the border.
This was not seen in the 10 years of the UPA. After that, the Ufa fiasco took place. This was followed by the terrorist attack in Gurdaspur which was followed by secret parleys between NSAs of the two countries .
”After that PM Modi was airdropped into Lahore. Why Nobody knows till today. Then came the attack in Pathankot. Then, the Pakistan JIT was invited to visit the Pathankot air base to investigate the terror attack, an invitation which was never reciprocated, by allowing the NIA to travel to Pakistan,” Mr Tewari said.
He said the Prime Minister should tell the people of the country what he achieved by his visit to Lahore, six months ago. He also wanted to know what was the discussion between the two NSAs which took place in Bangkok. ”Time has come for PM to tell India what he achieved by his visit to Lahore six months ago. What was the discussion between the two NSAs which took place in Bangkok,” he said.
Slamming the attempts by Pakistan to interfere in the happenings in Jammu and Kasshmir, Mr Tewari said, ”The attempts by Pakistan need to be deplored in strongest terms. It has no business to interfere in the internal affairs of the State. It is for the Jammu and Kashmir Government to handle the situation in the Valley.” (UNI)
