122 pilots found drunk before flight in 3 years: Jayant Sinha

NEW DELHI : A total of 122 pilots were detected consuming alcohol during pre-flight medical examination in the last three years. Out of these Mumbai airport reported maximum detection of 34, followed by Delhi and Kolkata at 31 and 18 respectively in the same period, the Lok Sabha was informed.
“As per the data available, 122 pilots have tested alcohol positive during the pre-flight medical examination for consumption of alcohol during the last three years,” Minister of State for Civil Aviation Jayant Sinha said in a written reply.
The Minister said maximum cases of alcohol consumption were reported in 2015 at 43, followed by 2013 and 2014 at 30 and 26, respectively. Mr Sinha further added that a total of 112 pilots were suspended for first violation and 12 for second violation. As per the provisions, such pilots were suspended for three months for the first violation and for five years for second violation on or before June 6, 2014. But after June 6, 2014, the Aviation ministry changed the provision and reduced the number of years from five to three years for second violation and unchanged for first violation. (AGENCIES)
