Highest no of suicides among CAPF is from CRPF

NEW DELHI, Aug 14: The highest number of suicides among the Central Armed Police Forces personnel (CAPF) is from CRPF with 137 people committing suicide in the last four years, official figures said.
As many as 12 people belonged to ITBP, 26 from SSB, 50 people were from CISF and 32 belonged to AR, who committed suicide in last four years.
According to the official data available here, the Government has also done an inquiry in which it was found out that in each case of fratricide, killing, firing at colleagues and suicide case, personal, domestic problem and illness was behind most of such cases of CAPF.
There were around 121 fratricide, killing and firing cases from BSF with 3, 1, 2, 9 and 1 number of cases from CRPF, ITBP, SSB, CISF and AR in last four years, the data added. The counselling of CAPF personnel is done on need basis. To reduce stress, practice of yoga is encouraged, the official added.
The Government has taken various measures to check the cases in future and to improve the working condition of CAPF personnel. Steps like transparent policies pertaining to transfer and leave of CAPFs and AR personnel, hospitalization period due to injuries while on duty is treated as on duty, regular interaction of officers with troops of officers with troops to find out and redress their grievances have been taken to reduce the stress.
“The Government has also taken steps to provide facility of retention of Government accommodation at the place of last posting (for keeping the family) while posted in North-East state, Jammu and Kashmir and LWE affected areas (except state capitals),” Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju said.
The Government is also providing better medical facilities, organizing talks with specialists to address their personal and psychological concerns and organizing meditation and yoga routinely for better stress management.
Other welfare measures have been taken like facility of Central Police Canteen (CPC), scholarship for wards etc. Also air courier service has been provided to CAPF personnel deployed in NE states, J&K and LWE affected areas as welfare measure. (UNI)
