HC warns IGP of contempt proceedings

Srinagar, Aug 20: The State High Court today directed contempt proceedings against Inspector General of Police Kashmir if court staff is not allowed to attend their duties during curfew and restrictions.
Justice A M Magray today expressed displeasure over the harassment of court employees by security forces and directed that if the court employees are not allowed to proceed on duty, contempt of court proceedings will be initiated against IGP Kashmir.
The judgment was passed after court employee was beaten by security forces in Natipora area of Srinagar while he was on way to attend his duties and court took its suo moto cognizance. “… no such incident should be repeated in future. IGP is directed to take steps to avoid such kind of incidents. It is made clear that if any judicial employee is not allowed to attend the court duty, the contempt of court proceedings would be initiated against the said officer”.
Earlier, the division bench of Chief Justice N Paul Vasanthakumar and Justice A M Magray today directed the State Government to file consolidated status report reflecting therein as how many injured persons since July 9 have been admitted and discharged after giving the treatment.
The court said that the report submitted by the counsel of the Police is incomplete and it does not show the actual details.
The court directed the AG to file fresh status report on number of patients admitted to hospitals each day and the date of discharge. He is also directed to file objections to the main PIL on use of shot gun for crowd control.
