JAMMU, Sept 1: Prof Vibha Tandon, Chairman, Women Scientists Scheme (WOS)-A, Chemical Sciences, Department of Science & Technology and Professor in Special Center for Molecular Medicine, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi today delivered an invited lecture on the topic, “Radioprotector in the treatment of Cancer”, at Department of Chemistry, University of Jammu.
She explained that Radiotherapy and chemotherapy are traditional cancer treatments that increase DNA damage in tumour cells. Due to higher replication rate of tumour cells, DNA repair mechanisms counteract the effects of radiation and chemotherapy treatment by promoting the replication of the tumour cells.
Prof Vibha Tandon has developed organic moieties that confer radioprotection through activation of specific enzyme. She elaborated on how an understanding of radiation chemistry has developed and it has been possible to develop compounds which modify the initial radiochemical event.
She also encouraged the students and research scholars to have a vision in their academics and research work in view to find the possibilities to explore new dimensions in this study of work.
The lecture was attended by various professors, students and research scholars of the Department.
