The targeting of the police started from day one when the protests broke out on July 9 this year against the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani. A police constable from Tral was the first target. He was shot at during the night intervening July 9 and 10. The protesters later severely thrashed his son.

In the same area near Parimpora a police man who was travelling in a car was stopped by protesters and was severely beaten. His Alto car in which he was travelling was torched. In Palhalan Pattan in Baramulla district, a cop was beaten up and his motor cycle was torched.
In Niklora Pulwama, a cop’s house was torched and a SPO’s house was set ablaze at Kulgam. Two police officers houses were attacked at Batmaloo in Srinagar and Anantnag for their role in dealing with the protesters.
Twenty eight apple trees of a police official were felled by protesters in Bijbehara and 25 apple trees of three police men of same family were felled at Awoora in Kupwara district. In Shopian, 4 kanals apple orchard of a police man was destroyed by the protesters.
Of late, militants and the Over Ground Workers (OGWs) are barging into the houses of the Police men, mostly in South Kashmir, and are harassing their families. They ask the inmates to tell their wards to resign from police or face consequences.
The militants even visited the house of a senior police officer in South Kashmir and asked the inmates about his movements.
Besides this, militants are releasing videos threatening cops and asking them to resign and are also pasting threat posters in villages and towns to demoralize the Police.
