SRINAGAR, Sept 11: A protester, who was injured in security forces firing in Central Kashmir district of Budgam last month, today succumbed to his injuries taking the death toll in 65 days of violence to 78.
A protester from Wadwan village of Central Kashmir’s Budgam district who was injured in security forces firing at Narbal in Budgam on August 5 succumbed at SKIMS hospital in Srinagar today.
The protester identified as Javaid Ahmad Dar, son of Ghulam Muhammad Dar, of Wadwan Budgam breathed his last at the hospital around today. Javaid was admitted to the hospital with a bullet injury in leg on August 5. The bullet had torn apart his artery which had necessitated an amputation and resulted in renal failure.
Hundreds of people participated in his funeral today at Wadwan and tension prevailed in the area.
Security forces fired tear gas to foil a protest rally in Central Kashmir’s Budgam district resulting in injuries to scores of protesters. A protest rally was to be held at Rathsun area of Budgam district. As soon as the people assembled in the complex of a Masjid in the locality, security forces fired tear smoke to disperse them. People threw stones at the security forces leading to clashes in which scores of people were injured.
Clashes erupted between protesters and security forces at Chota Bazar area of Srinagar this morning during which dozens of protesters were injured. Some protesters took out to streets and asked the vendors and shopkeepers to close down their business.
However, security forces reached the spot and they pelted stones on them. Dozens of protesters were injured after security forces fired tear gas and pellets to disperse the protesters.
Dozens of civilians were injured in clashes between security forces and stone-pelting protesters in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district. Thousands of residents of Karimabad and adjoining areas took to streets this morning to protest against the alleged nocturnal raids conducted by security forces. The protestors pelted stones at the security forces who retaliated by firing tear smoke and pellets. Twenty injured persons have been referred to various hospitals in the city.
Curfew remained in force in Anantnag town to foil separatists a protest march. Security forces were deployed in strength in the town and barricades were erected to prevent the movement of pedestrians and vehicles. All the entry and exit points of the town were sealed by the security forces. At least six protesters were injured after security forces fired tear gas to foil the a protest rally in the area.
At least ten protesters were injured after security forces foiled the protestrally at Markundal Hajin area of North Kashmir’s Bandipora district.
As people from Khumina, Barabad, Buchwari and Naidkhai started marching towards the venue, security forces fired tear gas and pellets injuring 10 persons.
Clashes erupted between protesters and security forces in Sopore area of Baramulla district during which security forces fired tear gas to disperse protesters.
Amid tensions, a strict curfew was imposed by authorities in Old City areas falling under five police stations including MR Gunj, Nowhatta, Khanyar, Rainawari and Safakadal.
Shutdown was observed across Kashmir with shops and commercial establishments, petrol pumps remained closed and traffic was off the roads for 65th day today. However, in the evening shops opened in many areas of Srinagar including Lal Chowk this evening and people were seen busy in shopping.
The train services between Banihal and Baramulla remained suspended for 65th day today. The pre-paid mobile services and mobile internet services continue to remain suspended due to security reasons.
According to Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Baseer Khan, there was no curfew today anywhere in the Kashmir valley. “However, restrictions were imposed in few places in Srinagar as also in some towns in the Valley,” he said.
He said that the overall situation in Kashmir remained under control throughout the Valley.
Meanwhile, as per statement issued by the Zonal Police Headquarters Kashmir, stray stone pelting incidents were reported from Sopore, Pulwama and Budgam.
“There was increased movement of traffic in the city Srinagar as well as in the towns. Shops were opened at various places and people were seen making purchases,” the statement said.
