JAMMU, Sept 12: Continuing with their efforts to check the entry of banned items into the State and acting under the guidance of Excise Commissioner, T.Angchok, the sleuths of Excise Department at Minor Toll Post Nagri foiled a major bid to smuggle “polythene”, when 2100kgs of polythene was seized from two different trucks entering the State.
According to a spokesman of the Department the trucks bearing registration No.HR69A5605 and HR69A5604 reported at the Toll Post for clearance late last night. As per the documents, the vehicles were carrying rice of Food Corporation of India (FCI) loaded through the office of Area Manager FCI Gurdaspur vide Challan No. 38, book No 497 and Challan No. 44, book No 497 respectively, dated 11-09-2016 to FSD Srinagar, he added.
The spokesman said the vehicles were brought at the Toll Post Lakhanpur where on physical checking, it was found that of 64 bags of polythene were concealed beneath rice bags in both the vehicles. The evaders tried to import banned polythene by importing the same in the garb of rice belonging to Government Corporation, he added.
He said the vehicle along with seized polythene is being handed over to the Pollution Control Board (PCB), for further action under relevant rules.
The whole operation was conducted by the Excise & Taxation Officer, Farooq Choudhary, Excise Inspectors  Deepak, Ashok Khajuria, Sub-Inspectors  Khursheed Farooqi and Excise Guard  Ranjit Singh.
Rajesh Sharma, Deputy Excise Commissioner, Toll Post Lakhanpur appreciated the efforts of the staff of the Minor Toll Post Nagri in foiling the attempt to smuggle banned item and enjoined them to work with more zeal & dedication to thwart the nefarious designs of smugglers.
