SKUAST-J distributes horticulture plants among tribal farmers

SAMBA, Sept 8: FSR Centre, SKUAST-Jammu, today organized one day Interaction programme with tribal farmers of Meen Charka and Bari Khad area of Samba district.
During the interaction, , Dr Dileep Kachroo, Chief Scientist of the Scheme and Registrar, SKUAST-Jammu, informed the farmers that the FSR Centre had developed an Integrated Farming System Model, which needs to be adopted as it is Bankable model for small and marginal farmers and is having the potential to increase farm income to three folds over the existing practice.
The University will help the farmers through various interventions by providing the input mainly Seeds of HYV crop, vegetables/fodder, expansion of Horticulture area through improve planting material, rearing of poultry (5-10 birds per farmer), adovocation of balanced feeding to animals and water harvesting tanks,” Prof Kachroo added.
Dr N P Thakur, I/c FSR; Dr A K Gupta, Sr Scientist; Dr Vijay Khajuria, Jr Scientist and Dr Parshotam Kumar, T A, also spoke on the occasion and explained about implementation programme of the scheme.
Dr N P Thakur I/c FSR and Dr A K Gupta, Sr Scientist I/c OFR, also provided a significance of fruit plants in IFS model by which farmer can realise good profit by investing less in inputs. The beneficiary farmers were distributed fruit plants of Mango (163), Lemon (135), Kinnow (180) and Guava (135).
Besides, Dr Dileep Kachroo planted fruit sapling in the farmers’ field and gave full emphasis to integrate fruit plants, which is one of the important component of IFS model under rain fed area.
Ghulam Mohd. and A.W. Katoch, FCLA, FSR, also assisted the farmers.
A cluster of 80 small and marginal tribal farmers have been selected under on farm participatory research programme in Farming System Perspective of On Farm Research sub component under TSP programme of AICRP-FSR (ICAR scheme) towards their upliftment through enhancement of annual income, livelihood and nutritional security.
