Srinagar, Sept 14: A protester was killed in mysterious circumstances in North Kashmir’s Sopore area while curfew and curfew like restrictions in parts of Kashmir and shutdown paralysed life in Kashmir for 68th day today.
A protester was allegedly killed in security forces beating in a village in Sopore area of North Kashmir’s Baramulla district last night, taking the death toll in the ongoing violence to 81.
The bruised body of 24-year-old Manzoor Lone, son of Ghulam Rasool, resident of Hardshiva was found in a stone quarry early this morning. Lone was missing since yesterday after a group of youth threw stones at Army who later chased them.
Residents alleged that Lone was caught by Army and thrashed and later he died and his body was recovered this morning. However, Army denied any involvement in the death of the protester.
The news of his death led to protests in the area. However, police and paramilitary CRPF personnel fired teargas to disperse the protesters.
A police spokesman said here that dead body of Manzoor Ahmad Lone son of Naseer Ahmad Lone, resident of Hardshiva Bomai, Sopore was recovered from the paddy fields today. “Police has taken cognizance of the matter and started investigation”, he said.
Elsewhere, curfew and curfew like restrictions in parts of Srinagar and other major towns and shutdown paralysed life in Kashmir during which protests were reported at few places.
A police spokesman said that apart from a few stray incidents of stone pelting the situation remained normal and under control throughout the Valley. He said curfew was imposed in the towns of Baramulla and Handwara, while as, restrictions were imposed in some parts of the Valley.
The shops and commercial establishments, petrol pumps, school and colleges remained closed and traffic was off the roads and train services between Banihal and Baramulla also remained suspended for 68th day today. However, there was some movement of private car in Civil Lines area of Srinagar city.
In afternoon, security forces allowed movement of people and vehicles in the old city area amid curfew like restrictions. People were seen distributing meat of sacrificial animals.
The BSNL broadband internet and mobile phone services across Kashmir valley remained shut. Postpaid mobile phones of BSNL are working, but outgoing call facility on pre-paid phones continued to remain suspended. The broadband services have been snapped for the second time since July 9, a day after the killing of Hizb commander Burhan Wani.
In North Kashmir’s Bandipora district, clashes broke out after protesters attacked a police officer’s vehicle. Protesters pelted stones on the vehicle of SP Bandipora at Nowpora Chowk. Security forces fired tear smoke to disperse the protesters, triggering clashes in Gulshan Chowk and Nowpora Chowk.
Earlier large number of people from Ayatmulla, Ajar, Nowpora, Wusoo and Kaloosa, marched to the house of Mustafa Mir who was killed in security forces firing yesterday.
Protesters torched a showroom of BJP district president Sheikh Wasim Bari in the main market in Bandipora town.
Protests broke out in Dharmuna village of Budgam district after a protest march was intercepted by Army today. The residents of the area were marching to Wadwan Budgam to the home of Javaid Ahmad Dar who died on September 11, over a month after being hit by a bullet during clashes in Narbal area of the district.
The protesters from Soibugh area who were intercepted by Army at Dharmuna pelted few stones on an Army vehicle. The Army blocked road to Wadwan at Dharmuna 2 RR camp and beat up few protesters. However, large number of protesters assembled at the house of slain Dar in Wadwan.
At least five persons sustained pellet injuries while one was hit in both eyes in Ompora area of Central Kashmir’s Budgam district this evening.
Security forces fired pellets and tear-gas to disperse protesters at Ompora resulting in injuries to at least five persons.
A protester was critically injured after alleged stabbing by security forces in Kulgam district in South Kashmir today. Reports said that Rameez Ahmad Gani, 30, was stabbed multiple times in the compound of his house in Buchroo village. He was shifted to District hospital Anantnag where from he was referred to SKIMS Soura for treatment.
The residents of Bijbehara today offered Eid prayers at Jamia Masjid in Baba Mohalla to make up for Eid prayers they missed yesterday due to strict curfew imposed in the town.
A Police spokesman said that one person, Mohammad Sultan Dar son of Ghulam Mohammad resident of Chek-i-Cheratram Kunzar reported in police station Kunzer that his son namely Shabir Ahmad Dar who was travelling to his home from Bewa in his vehicle bearing registration number JK05C-3550 was stopped near Cheeratram by miscreants.
“These miscreants pelted stones on his vehicle and damaged it. They also beat up Shabir Ahmad. On this complaint, police has registered a case FIR number 90/2016 under Sections 336, 427 and 307 RPC. The accused have been identified as Waqar Ahmad Hajam son of Ghulam Nabi, Yaseen Hajam, Saqib Hajam sons of Ghulam Hassan Hajam resident of Check-e-Cheeratram. Police has launched a manhunt to arrest these miscreants”, the spokesman said.
