SAMBA, Sept 17: Farmers and residents of around seven villages, whose land is reportedly being acquired for Industrial Growth Centre, today staged protest against the district administration for acquiring their agricultural land and blocked vehicular movement on busy Jammu-Pathankot National Highway for nearly two hours at Main Chowk Samba.
Protesters from Karandi, Ramnagar, Kali Bari Camp, Panjtilla and Karadian villages raised slogans against the Industries Minister and the district administration and opposed the acquisition of agriculture land for Industrial Growth Centre.
The protest was led by ex MLA Samba Yash Pal Kundal and State general secretary Congress, Vinod Mishra.
Workers and leaders of several political parties also joined the protest to support farmers.
Protesters said that the lives of farmers are at stake as the Government is trying to acquire the land in several villages of Samba, where agriculture is the major activity.
Hundreds of farmers will become landless if authorities acquired their fertile land. “We will not allow the Government to acquire our land’’, said Bishan Lal, a protester.
“We will launch a massive agitation if Government did not exempt our agricultural land’’,he added.
Later ADC Samba Pawan Sharma arrived at spot and pacified the protesters. He assured the farmers that their land will not acquired for Industrial Growth Centre, after which protesters dispersed.
