Union Finance Ministry proposes to target the kerosene subsidy after having made successful experiment with food and fertilizer. There is pilferage in the distribution of kerosene on a large scale according to the complaints brought to the FM. It is also reported that petrol and diesel are adulterated with kerosene. There are more complaints of unfair distribution in which the benefits of the subsidy do not reach the end users. Again, there is growing desire among the states to become kerosene free. Keeping these conditions in view, the Finance Minister has worked on the scheme under which the genuine targeted people will receive the benefit of subsidy. The idea is that the poorer sections of people have to be targeted for this facility. The Finance Minister thinks that by slow and sustained efforts, it will become a habit with the people to reduce the subsidy so that there is larger scope for bringing the weaker sections of society under the purview of kerosene subsidy. We welcome the measure and hope that the corruption that has become rampant in the distribution of kerosene will be eradicated lock, stock and barrel.
