Grenade attack at MLA’s house, 76 arrested

SRINAGAR, Oct 5: Shut down paralysed life in Kashmir for 89th day today while police continued its crackdown against the protesters and arrested 76 of them and last night a grenade was hurled at legislator’s house in South Kashmir.
Militants attacked the residence of a ruling PDP MLA in Shopian town of Kashmir by lobbing a grenade at it. However, there was no damage due to the explosion that took place last night.
Police said that militants hurled a grenade at the residence of MLA Shopian Mohammad Yousuf Bhat at 11:10 pm last night.  The grenade landed in the compound of the house and exploded without causing any damage.
Security forces men were heavily deployed in three police station areas of Srinagar’s Old City – MR Gunj, Nowhatta and Khanyar – since early morning to foil any protests.
In Civil Lines and uptown areas of Srinagar, extra-ordinary movement of private transport and pedestrians was seen since early morning but shops, commercial establishments and educational institutes were closed.
However, the vendors had set up their stalls at Batamaloo, Lal Chowk, Dalgate, Sonwar, Jehangir Chowk, Exhibition crossing and Jawahar Nagar.
The security forces were deployed at sensitive areas in strength to prevent any protests and violence.
In the evening, the markets across Srinagar opened at 5 pm and there were traffic jams at several places in Civil lines areas. The markets including Lal Chowk witnessed huge rush of people.
According to a statement issued by the Zonal Police Headquarters Kashmir, the situation across the valley remained by and large peaceful although a couple of stray incidents of stone pelting were reported from Arwani in Anantnag and from Main Chowk, Bandipora.
According to the statement, during the day normal flow of traffic and movement of people was observed in Srinagar and other parts of the valley. “Vendors in good numbers were on the streets. Normal movement of vehicles was seen in the main towns and on the inter district roads of the valley,” it said.
The statement said that the miscreants involved in the incidents of setting on fire two Autorikshaws yesterday in Srinagar are being identified and adequate compensation is being paid to the auto owners.
Meanwhile, according to the statement, in its continuous and sustained drive against the trouble mongers police during last 24 hours arrested 76 such people involved in various offences of disturbing public order in different parts of the valley.
Clashes erupted between protesters and security forces in Magarmal Bagh area of Srinagar today. Police fired tear gas to disperse the protesters.
Minor clashes were also reported from several old city areas during which security forces fired teargas to foil these protests.
Clashes erupted between youth and forces in Goriwan and Arwani areas of Bijbehara town during which security forces fired tear smoke to disperse the protesters.  One protester was injured and was shifted to Sub District Hospital Bijbehara for treatment.
