JAMMU, Oct 9: The Oxygen Concentrator Plant of Government Medical College and Hospital, Jammu, is lying shut for over last 5-6 days as some fault has erupted in it.
According to the hospital sources, the Oxygen Concentrator Plant of GMC Jammu which has a capacity of 1200 litres per minute and was installed in the year 2014, is not functional for last about one week due to some fault in its components.
“Due to non-functioning of the plant, the hospital administration is bound to purchase about 500-600 cylinders per day from some private players, as the oxygen consumption limit of the hospital is about 15 to 18 cylinders per hour if one cylinder is of the capacity of 71/2 litres”, the sources said, adding, the purchasing of the cylinders is being done on daily basis to avoid any eventuality.
According to XEn, Mechanical Division of the Medical College, Manesh Khurana, there was some fault erupted in the compressor of the Oxygen plant some days ago and the local engineers could not remove the fault due to which they have to call engineers from a Pune based company, from which the component was procured for installation. He added that the component is in warranty, which is going to be expired after 5-6 months.
He said that the restoration of the plant will take about 15-20 days, as the company engineers have taken the defective compressor with them on last Saturday and transportation of the component (which is about 400 Kg in weight) from Jammu to Pune takes at least 6-7 days and the same time needed to bring the component back from Pune to Jammu while additional two-three days are needed to remove the fault and then installed it back in the Oxygen plant.
When contacted, Medical Superintendent, GMC Jammu, Dr Ramesh Gupta, said that they are facing difficulties in meeting the demand of the oxygen in the hospital but somehow they are managing it by purchasing oxygen cylinders from private agencies.
