RAJOURI, Oct 12: Irate public blocked Jammu-Poonch highway at Narian near Nowshera for about five hours after a speeding passenger vehicle (Winger) crushed an ex-serviceman (Hony Capt Retd) to death last night.
Reports said that mishap took place at around 8.30 pm last night when ex-serviceman Mohan Singh (52) was on way to his home at nearby village on bike. A speeding Winger vehicle coming from Jammu side to Rajouri hit the bike with great force from back and the driver sped away from the spot, leaving the victim in the pool of blood. He kept lying on the road for long time and later somebody informed police at Chingus that an injured was lying on the road.
The police party shifted the injured to Nowshera hospital where doctors declared him as brought dead. The police sent the body for postmortem. Later, family members and relatives of the deceased also arrived there.
The family members, relatives and villagers of the area took the body of the deceased and kept it on the road at Narian and at around 10 am and started protest demonstration. They raised barricades on the busy highway and sat on dharna. A large number of women also joined. They were protesting against Chingus Police for not taking prompt action to intercept the vehicle. The agitating people demanded that vehicle be traced and its driver arrested without any delay.
SHO Nowshera, SHO Rajouri Chaman Gorkha and Police party from Chingus Police Post arrived the spot after an hour but people refused to lift dharna. A long traffic jam was created there.
Later, SSP Rajouri Rajeshwar Singh and Addl DC Rajouri Mumtaz Choudhary arrived there. They talked to the people and assured that vehicle will be traced shortly. They also accepted the demand of the public that speed brakers be constructed at this side near Narian. On the assurance of the SSP and ADC, they lifted dharna.
