Election Commission orders revision of electoral rolls

SRINAGAR, Oct 15: The Election Commission of India has announced the schedule for Special Summary Revision of Electoral Rolls with reference to January 1, 2017 with a view to preparing accurate rolls inclusive of all eligible persons as electors.
According to a circular No. 38-GAD of 2016 dated 15-10-2016, while the names of dead/shifted or otherwise disqualified electors are required to be deleted and particulars of electors corrected and updated, the focus is on registration of new age voters and the missing voters especially in the category of PWDs, gender and other vulnerable and marginalized section of the society.
The revision process has a number of pre-determined activities which need to be completed within pre-fixed time line. As such, for revision of rolls, the Commission expects enthusiastic participation of the public and full involvement and cooperation of political parties, rural urban local bodies, NGOs etc.
For completion of this massive exercise, the entire election machinery from CEO/DEOs/ EROs/Supervisors to BLO is required to be involved.
During the period of revision of Electoral Rolls in the State, the Commission has instructed to ensure; Provision of adequate staff; Ban on transfer of officers and staff engaged with revision of roll; Posting of substitute officers; Restriction on deployment of certain officers; and Provision of adequate fund.
Accordingly it was impressed upon all the Secretaries, the Divisional Commissioners and the Deputy Commissioners to comply strictly with the instructions issued by the Government of India in its DO letter No. 434/1/2016/ERS, dated August 26, 2016.
