This refers to the news item’Army conducts seminar on social networking'(DE, Oct5, 2016). It is heartening to read that the Signal Regiment of the Army based at Reasi conducted a seminar on the topic’Social Networking Sites:Need for Responsible Handling’at General Zorawar Singh Memorial Degree College, Reasi to inform the youth about how to use the social networking sites in a gainful manner.There is no doubt that social media has taken the world by storm and number of people using social networking sites is on the increase with each passing day. Social sites play an important role in sharing and transmitting valuable information regarding business, accidents, disasters, exams, results etc.
But at the same time social media is misused by some people in various ways. Pornographic videos /photos and messages are uploaded and in some cases victims are harassed by blackmailing them.Hate messages are also posted at times, which incite people for communal and other riots.Then, many people post derogatory messages about various political leaders and other VIPs and thus, tarnish their image in the public.Similarly, some people, especially the youth and the students are so much addicted to the social media that they can miss their meals but not chatting on their phones.
Thus,they waste a lot of time in browsing the social sites at the cost of their studies.They are losing social skills to such an extent that they feel more comfortable in chatting rather than talking verbally and wishing birthday and other messages to their relatives and friends.
The Army deserves appreciation for conducting the seminar for the youth with an objective to sensitise them about using social networking sites in a gainful and responsible manner.There is need to conduct such seminars, debates, symposia, etc by the local administration, educational authorities, Information Department, Army and other agencies at block, tehsil and district level to aware more and more youth about the proper use of social media.
