SAMBA, Oct 18: The Ravi Canal in Vijaypur area has become a health hazard for the residents living on its banks in general and Vijaypur town in particular as authorities have failed to clean the canal properly.
The canal has added to the environmental pollution as the drainage water from many areas in Vijaypur is also diverted to it. The people apprehend spread of epidemic as the canal has become the breeding point of mosquitoes also. The residents said that when already some Dengue cases were detected in Jammu region, the authorities are not taking steps to keep the canal clean.
They said wild bushes have grown on both sides of the canal in Vijaypur and Samba belt which have even spread over surface of water impeding the flow. There are thick bushes along both banks of Ravi canal and apprehending mishap one can’t walk along the bank, they added.
The people have demanded that cleanliness drive be launched immediately and the bushes on both sides of the canal be cut and throwing of drainage water in the canal be banned immediately.
People alleged that authorities have failed to clean the canal till date and every year the cleanliness drive on which huge amount is withdrawn from the treasury is nothing except an eye wash.
