Seven traffic patrols pressed into service in accident prone areas

SRINAGAR, Oct 5: Traffic Police Jammu today pressed into service seven fully equipped Traffic Highway Patrols in the accident prone areas of Jammu Province. The patrols, provided by Police Headquarters have been installed with an aim to enforce the traffic laws strictly and to minimise fatal road accidents in these areas.
This was disclosed by Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Traffic Jammu,  Shakeel Ahmed Beig during his one day visit of accident prone areas of Doda and Bhaderwah.
He said that the highway patrols were pressed into service after briefing to the traffic cops deployed in these areas. The patrols carrying traffic related equipments, traffic enforcement items like speedo meters, breath analyzers and rescue items would help in implementing traffic rules and providing immediate assistance to the victims of road accidents, he added.
The DIG said that each patrol has been equipped with communication network like wireless sets and mobile phones besides help line numbers have been displayed on the patrols for convenience of the public to ask for traffic related assistance. He said that the system would help in curbing overloading, over speeding, drunk driving, use of mobile phones and music players while driving. Plying of unfit vehicles without valid documents and invalid driving licenses would be curbed through the newly introduced system, he added.
He said that Traffic Police will launch a special drive against errant auto-rikshaw drivers for overcharging and misbehaviour with the passengers  from October 8, 2012.
Mr. Beig said that auto-rikshaw operators have been directed to set their meters right within three days and the violators will be dealt with iron hand and strict action under law will be initiated against them.
He further informed that special drive against violators of traffic signals and two wheelers plying without crash helmet has already been launched, adding that during the month of October a total number of 2356 vehicles have been challaned for traffic violations and Rs.4.07 lakh, as compound money, have been realized from the defaulters.
