Army launches afforestation drive in north Kashmir

Srinagar, Dec 1: As part of the ‘Swachta Pakhwada’ from December 1 to15, Indian Army based at Uplona in north Kashmir launched a sanitation as well as afforestation drive today in the area of Naugam Kandi involving the school children and the locals from the villagers.
A defence spokesman said the children from Government Middle School, Nilsar along with the locals carried out cleanliness and sanitation of the adjoining areas driving home the importance in the hearts and minds of all people participating. The same initiative is planned to be continued by the Army in coming days in more areas involving different schools, he said.
Simultaneously, the spokes-man said, afforestation drive was also conducted at Nilsar wherein the students, locals and the Army personnel collaborated in to plant 500 trees of deodar in the village. “These would boost the forest cover and instill a sense of environment conservation, generate awareness and pride in the students in their efforts to conserve nature.
“The Army plans to take the initiative forward and plant more than 1000 trees of deodar in area of responsibility of Uplona Army Camp in the coming days. Various health initiatives are also being planned in remote areas of Naugam Kandi viz medical and veterinary camp in the coming days to celebrate Swachta Pakhwada,” he said.
