Gold medalist Khannu gets bionic arms, shakes hands with fellow inmates for first time

JAMMU, Dec 3: It was a dream come true for 13-year-old physically challenged girl child Khannu, an inmate of JRC Home for Handicapped Udheywala Jammu, when she was presented bionic arms by the management of the institution in a function organized to mark World Disabled Day.
Fabricated by most modern techniques with sophisticated material designed by multinational companies, the fitment of bionic arms was made possible at a cost Rs 6 lakh.
Khannu was born with only one leg and having merely upper halves of both arms.
Despite her being physically challenged, she won a Gold Medal in National Games for Handicapped held at Ajmer in December 2013. The basic idea for bionic limbs was mooted by prominent social activist and organizer of Viklang Chhatra Trust Satya Pal Saraf who took Khannu to some MNCs at New Delhi and Gurgaon to explore the possibility of fitment of bionics.
J Chhatrapal, Secretary of JRC Home disclosed that the management of JRC Home arranged Rs 3 lakh from its donors including Hariprabhu Sanstha of Nagrota Gujroo, and an equal amount was provided by Amrit Malhotra, Ex-Chairman of J&K Legislative Council.
The battery operated bionics is the application of biological methods and systems found in nature to the study and design of engineering systems and modern technology. Its user can perform activities with muscular reflexes and will-power. It was the first time in J&K that such limbs are provided to a disabled.
Out of sheer joy, Khannu, for the first time in her life shook hands with her fellow inmates who congratulated her for new lease of ability.
A cultural programme was also presented by the inmates on the occasion.
Gulshan Kumar and Bhavana were declared best boy and best girl of the Home and were suitably awarded.
The function was presided over by octogenarian social activist PV Rawal. Among others present were Satish Sharma, Er Ashutosh, Dr Sukhpal Sawhney, Madan Padha, Shaka Syal, prominent social workers, dignitaries and donors.
