AMRISTAR : Prime Minister Narendra Modi today held a bilateral meeting with Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani here in the holy city on the sidelines of the Heart of Asia Conference.
“Beginning together before the #HeartofAsia Ministerial. PM @narendramodi and President @ashrafghani hold an important bilateral meeting,” tweeted Vikas Swarup, Spokesman of the Ministry of External Affairs.
Claiming participation by nearly 40 countries and leading groups like the European Union, the conference will try to explore ways to effectively deal with the threat of terrorism and other conflicts in the region and and help the war-ravaged Afghanistan.
Senior officials of all 14 countries, including India, China, Russia, Iran and Pakistan and representatives of supporting nations discussed on various issues concerning terrorism, radicalisation and extremism.
Meanwhile, Pakistan Prime Minister’s Advisor on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz also met Mr Ghani.
The meeting came in the backdrop of Afghan government often sounding critical of Pakistan over thye rising terror attacks on Afghanistan by militant groups.
The Heart of Asia-Istanbul Process floated in 2011, aims to encourage strategic, political and economic cooperation between Afghanistan and its neighbours. (agencies)
