JAMMU, Dec 17: Jammu & Kashmir’s first exclusive Temporo-Mandibular Joint (TMJ) clinic has been started at Gandhi Nagar, Jammu.
This clinic will cater to the needs of patients who are suffering from Temporo-Mandibular Joint disorders (TMD) as most of the patients have to move out of J&K for treatment of TMD. Temporo-mandibular joint disorder is an umbrella term covering pain and dysfunction of the muscles that move the jaw and the joint which connect the jaw to skull. The most important feature is pain, followed by restricted mouth opening and noises from the temporo-mandibular joints (TMJ) during jaw movement.
Dr Gautam Sharma, President of the Indian Dental Association (IDA), said that there is steep upsurge in number of cases that suffer from TMD especially young adults in the age group of 14 to 30. He informed that main complaint of people accompanying a patient suffering from TMD is that the patient loses self confidence and avoids meeting people, which is a very disturbing trend and can have negative effect on the psychology of an individual.
Dr Rohit Punga, Oral and Maxillofacial surgeon, Director Zahnärzte- aesthetic Facial Surgery Clinic and visiting consultant Artemis Hospital, Gurgaon, along with Dr Gautam Sharma, president IDA, will be treating the patients of TMD at Jammu.
Dr Punga has already identified and treated the patients suffering from this problem by a treatment modality known as TMJ arthrocentesis at Jammu. Dr Gautam Sharma said that poor and BPL patients will be treated free of cost for TMD at his dental centre in Gandhi Nagar.
