Srinagar, Dec 18: Srinagar recorded coldest night of the season as temperatures plummeted to minus 4.9 degree Celsius today and Meteorological Department has forecast dry weather which may lead to further drop in temperature.
Srinagar witnessed the coldest night of the season so far as temperatures last night dipped to a low of minus 4.9 degree Celsius. A MeT official said that due to clear night sky during the next few days, the minimum temperatures are likely to drop further in the Valley.
The lowest night temperature was minus 5.9 degree Celsius in Pahalgam and minus 3 degree Celsius in Gulmarg.
Qazigund recorded a low of minus 3.6 degree Celsius, Kupwara minus 5 degree Celsius and Kokernag a low of minus 2.3 degree Celsius.
Leh town recorded minus 12 degree Celsius while the night’s lowest temperature was minus 9.4 in Kargil.
Jammu city recorded a low of 7.5 degree Celsius, Katra town had 8.2 degree Celsius, Banihal 0.5 degree Celsius, Batote 4.8 degree Celsius while the minimum temperature in Bhaderwah town was 0.6 degree Celsius.
Srinagar recorded maximum day temperature of 11.9 degree Celsius while normal day temperature for this time of the year is 9 degree Celsius Qazigund recorded 11.3 degree Celsius, Pahalgam 11.4 degree Celsius, Kupwara 12.3 degree Celsius, Kokernag 10.3 degree Celsius, Gulmarg 6.2 degree Celsius, Leh 9.7 degree Celsius and Kargil 4 degree Celsius.
Jammu recorded a maximum of 21.9 degree Celsius, Katra 18.1 degree Celsius, Banihal 18.6 degree Celsius, Batote 16.8 degree Celsius and Bhaderwah 15.3 degree Celsius.
The official said cold and dry weather is likely to continue in Jammu and Kashmir during the next two days. The present cold wave conditions are likely to intensify further as we are expecting clear night sky during the next two days.
The tapes and water pipes also froze at several places leading to the water crisis in certain areas in the morning. However, as Sun came out there was some relief.
With continued dry weather conditions and subzero temperatures, the water bodies have started freezing in Kashmir valley ahead of the “Chillai Kalan”, the 40 day chilly period of winter.
Frosty mornings and slippery roads cause problems to pedestrians and motorists in Srinagar city.
