SRINAGAR, Dec 20: Security is on high alert along the National Highway in Kashmir after attack on Army convoy last week in Pampore area of Pulwama district in which three Army personnel were killed and two injured.
Northern Army Commander, Lt General D Anbu today visited 1-Sector Headquarters of Army at Khannabal in Anantnag and reviewed the operational preparedness and prevailing situation in South Kashmir.
The visit comes three days after the attack on Army convoy in South Kashmir in which three Army men were killed and two others were injured.
The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 15 Corps, Lt General JS Sandhu, was accompanying him at RR Headquarters where he briefed him about the operations being conducted against militants who have increased their activities and have established network during the 5-month long unrest in Kashmir.
The other senior Army officers also brief the Northern Commander about the operations being conducted against the militants and their coordination with other security agencies including Police.
In the meantime, security forces had established check points at Gallender, Kadalbal and Sempora on National Highway in Pulwama district and were frisking the vehicles at these places on the highway since early morning.
They had also established checkpoints at Kakapora, Dangerpora and at Khadermoh junction on Pulwama-Kakapora road to conduct surprise checks and frisking of suspicious vehicles. However, no one was arrested during the checking and frisking of the vehicles.
Security forces have also stepped up their hunt to track down the militants of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) who attacked the Army convoy on December 17 in Pampore area of Pulwama district killing three Army men and injuring two others.
For last few days, security forces cordoned of several villages in Anantnag, Pulwama, Kulgam and Shopian districts as part of the hunt to track the Pampore convoy attackers.
In order to intensify security along the National Highway that has become frequent target of militants, Close Circuit Televisions (CCTVs) have been installed on security force bunkers deployed along the highway. Security forces are installing CCTV on the National Highway for security purposes and till the proposal is finaized security bunkers are being used to meet the demand for the time being.
Security forces also established check points along the National Highway at several places in Baramulla district this morning after two militants were spotted on the highway. However, no one was arrested at these check points during frisking of vehicles.
Last evening two LeT militants slipped out of the security cordon at Brat Kalan in Sopore area of North Kashmir’s Baramulla district. Security forces cordoned of the village after they received information about presence of two foreign LeT militants.
However, during the searches they found that the militants had fled the village as the security forces were laying the cordon around it. The search operation was later called off.
Security forces have inputs that the militants are planning to carry out attacks on security forces and the highway is the main target. In order to foil the attacks, security forces are dominating the highway and villages around it.
