Rs 27.9 lakh cash seized in Ganderbal

SRINAGAR, Dec 22: Police have detained three persons after they recovered Rs 27.90 lakh old currency from a car in which they were travelling in Central Kashmir district of Ganderbal.
The old currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 denomination worth Rs 27.96 lakh were recovered from an Alto car bearing registration number JK15-5969 when police stopped it during a routine checking at night in Safapora are of district Ganderbal.
Police detained three persons identified as Bilal Ahmad Dar son of Bashir Ahmad Dar of Plan Bandipora, Nisar Ahmad Lone son of Ghulam Ahmad Lone and Mudassir Ahmad Wani son of Mukhtar Ahmad Wani of Chek Reshipora Bandipora who were travelling in the car.
Senior Superintendent of Police Ganderbal, Imtiaz Ismail Parray, told Excelsior that the money belonged to a carpet dealer who was taking it to Ganderbal. He said that two persons who were detained with him, including a police constable, had no knowledge about the cash being transported in the car.
The SSP said that during the investigations, the carpet dealer owned the cash but he was not able to justify the source. He said that the case has been handed over to the Income Tax Department as it seems it is the case of tax evasion.
He said that Police has seized the car and cash and IT department is questioning the carpet dealer and his associates. He said that during the questioning, the carpet dealer said that he has Current Accounts in Bandipora where he was going to deposit the cash.
