KATRA, Dec 24: Fully equipped Cardiac Care unit with state-of-art-facilities to perform complex heart surgeries and attend cardiac emergencies round the clock at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspeciality Hospital in Katra has proved a boon to patients suffering from heart disease in  J&K State.
The pilgrims and tourists visiting Jammu from far-away places can now have a sigh of relief as their health problems and medical emergencies will be attended by the super-specialist doctors at  this Hospital at Kakryal near Katra.
33- year- old Gopi Kishan,  a resident of Rajasthan had a massive heart attack on his way to visit Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine. He was young, never had alcohol and was a non-smoker. Still he had a heart attack, which manifested with acute chest pain during the pilgrimage. He was immediately rushed to Narayana Hospital on last Sunday afternoon for emergency cardiac treatment for MI cases that was performed by Dr Ujjaval Chandra Mehrotraand team using Primary Angioplasty technique.
“His left side coronary artery had a 100 percent block. In such cases, the patient must be treated within 90 minutes to avoid any damage to the heart muscles”, explained Dr Ujjaval Chandra Mehrotra, Senior Consultant Cardiologist and Electrophysi-ologist at  Narayana Hospital.
“It is observed that heart problems are seen among younger patients these days. This is the third case we have treated in our hospital showing trends of heart attack or Myocardial Infarction in an early age, indicating that heart attack has no age factor”,  Dr Ujjaval said adding that any unusual pain in the chest should be brought to the notice of a specialist doctor immediately.
Primary Angioplasty is performed during cardiac emergencies such as heart attacks when the patient is very critical and there is 100% block in the arteries. It is different from the regular angioplasty procedure done to remove blocks in the arteries.
Speaking about the importance of the golden hour period, Dr Chandra said, “The first 3 to 6 hours after a patient suffers acardiac arrest is considered as the golden hour period.   If brought in within this period to any hospital with a good team of cardiac experts, the damage to heart muscles can be avoided”.
Dr Shirish M Dhoble , Clinical Director – SMVDNSH said, “We would advice the Yatris to get a complete health check-up done before taking on the pilgrimage to assess their fitness and health condition. One must always take the prescribed medication on time regularly.”
